Fish Oil for Baby Brain Function & Development

When people talk about food for the baby brain, you tend to hear DHA.

What exactly is DHA?

DHA is a type of (good) fat. DHA stands for Docosahexaenoic acid, which is an omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential in maintaining the wellbeing of the body.

DHA is needed for the development of visual abilities and the nervous system during an infant's first 6 months of life. It also encourages the development of brain cells and facilitates the transmission of signals along the nerve cells.

How is DHA beneficial for babies and children?
  • Infants fed with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids have better cognitive function.
  • Children of mothers who consumed fish oils during pregnancy exhibited better hand-eye coordination.
  • Other studies also show that rats with DHA deficiency had poorer learning abilities and memory.
Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be manufactured by our body and must be taken from food sources or supplements.

It is found naturally in fatty fish such as cod, salmon, sardine and tuna. It is also available in fish oil and cod liver oil supplements.

4 Amazing Abs Exercises

#1 Side Plank with Alternating Leg Raise
Get into a side plank with your hand directly under your shoulder and your bottom leg slightly in front of your  top leg, the slowly kick your bottom leg forward as far as you can. Tap the toes of your bottom foot with your top hand, then repeat with your top leg. That's one rep. Do 15, then switch to the other side to complete one set.

#2 Triangle Press

Stand with your feet about three feet apart, with your right foot pointing forward and your left foot pointing sideways; hold eight-pound weights at your sides. Extend your right arm overhead, then reach the left weight toward your left ankle. Go as far as you can, then reverse to return to standing. That's one rep. Do 15, then repeat on the other side.

# 3 Uneven Arm Hold with Arm Fly

Get into an elbow plank position. Raise your right arm in front of you so it's parallel to the ground and lift your left leg at least two inches. "Fly" your arm and leg out, moving them away from your head and body, then reverse back to the starting position. Drop down, then repeat with the opposite arm and leg. That's one rep. Do 15.

Quick Tip: Make it easier by lifting your legs and shoulders only slightly off the ground.

#4 Superman Roll into Pike Crunch

Lie facedown on the ground with your arms and legs extended, then lift your arms, chest, and legs off the ground. Without touching the ground with your hands, use your core to roll onto your back. Simultaneously raise your arms and legs into a pike crunch so they meet above the center of your belly (c). Lower your arms and legs, then roll back to start and repeat. Do 15.

MediShield

For those who prefer to watch video instead of reading the text below about MediShield. Click here to view webcast to know more about MediShield.

What is MediShield?
MediShield is a medical insurance scheme which is designed to helps CPF members meet the large costs of your hopitalisation at Class B2 or C wards.

For Singaporeans who plan to use Class B1 or higher ward classes, you may wish to consider purchasing Medisave-approved private Integrated Shield Plans on top of your Medishield. MediShield and other Medisave-approved private Integrated Shield Plans are designed to cater to your different insurance coverage needs.

Premiums for MediShield are commonly paid by Medisave. The premiums for Integrated Shield Plans can be paid through Medisave up to a limit of $800 per per year per insured person. For those above 80 years old, the Medisave withdrawal limit was increased to $1,150 per year per insured person from 1 December 2008.

Who are insured under MediShield?
MediShield is an opt-out scheme. This means that Singaporeans or Permanent Residents will automatically be insured under MediShield when they first contribute to their CPF accounts, unless they choose to opt out.

What part of the hospital bill does MediShield cover?

The patient will have to first pay the deductible and co-insurance portions.  Medishield will then pay between 80% and 90% of th remaining claimable amount, depending on the size of the bill. The patient can use Medisave or cash to pay for the portion of the bill not covered by MediShield. The maximum entry age is at 75 years old, and the maximum coverage age is 85 years old.  The annual premium increases with age.

What is a deductible and co-insurance?
A deductible is the amount you would need to pay for claim(s) made in a policy year, before
there is a payout from MediShield. Co-insurance is the amount you need to co-pay after meeting the Deductible. Co-insurance is lower for larger claimable amounts, thus reducing the percentage share of payment by you for larger hospital bills. Co-insurance is three-tiered, ranging from 20% to 10% as the bill size increases. Please click here for more details.

To estimate the maximum amount that you can claim from Medisave or MediShield, click here to go to Medisave/MediShield Online Calculator.

Something That I have Read Recently

"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard,' I am always tempted to ask, 'Compared to what'? - Sidney Harris

"The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved... loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves." - Victor Hugo

"Customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interuption on our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an oursider on our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so."

Finally this last one...

First, I was dying to finish my high school and start college.
And then I was dying to finish college and start working.
Then I was dying to marry and have children.
And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough so I could go back to work.
But then I was dying to retire.
And now I am dying...
And suddenly I realized I forgot to live.

Please don't let this happen to you. Appreciate your current situation and enjoy each day old friend.

Hmm....

Fairness does not govern life & death. If it did, no good person would ever die young.

Why would people gather when others die? Why people feel they should? The human spirits knows, deep down, that all lives intersect.

Death doesn't just take someone, it misses someone else and in the small distance between being taken and being misses, lives are changed.

There is a balance to it all. One withers, another grows. Birth & death are part of a whole.

Strangers are just family you have yet come to know.

Holding anger is poison. It eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves.

What Are Your Emotions Telling You?

Ever wondered what your emotions are telling you? For me, I have never thought about it before. To me, an emotion was just an emotion that I am feeling at a point of time and nothing more than that.

I only came to know that emotions were actually telling us something that we are not consciously aware of.

When we feel angry it actually means that something/someone or whatever that is happening at that point of time when we experience the anger have cross the line.
When we feel sad it actually means that we feel a sense of loss.
Being aware of the reason behind your emotions could help you better understand and control your emotions. To feel less angry or sad, you have to redefine the boundries of what make you feel that someone/something have cross the line and your perspective towards how you define loss.

Personality Test

I enjoy taking personality test. Recently, I took a free test from keisey.com & http://www.personaldna.com/tests.php, it is not a comprehensive report, but it does tells you which temperament you fall under.
